About this Event
In Colonial times, the Great Road connected Springfield and Albany. In the winter of 1776, Henry Knox famously led his “Noble Train of Artillery” along this route on its way to Boston, helping turn the tide of the American Revolutionary War. Remarkably, portions of the original route still exist today, hidden within the forest! In celebration of MA250, explore a preserved section of one of the Berkshires’ oldest roads and hear its stories as told by Rob Hoogs, from the Bidwell House Museum and Monterey Historical Society, and Alec Gilman from the DCR.
This is a hike of moderate difficulty, recommended for teenagers and older. Wear weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy footwear. Bring drink/snack, sunscreen, and bug spray. Hiking poles are recommended. Friendly dogs are permitted on leash. For more information, call 413-426-7890.
This hike will go 2.5 miles and last approximately 2 hours. Light rain will not cause a cancellation, but the walk will not go if heavy showers or thunderstorms are forecast.
The program will begin on Brett Road, not at the Bidwell House. To get the location of the hike follow these directions: From the center of Monterey, at the intersection of Tyringham Road and Rt 23/Main Road, head west on Rt 23/Main Road for 1.6 miles, then turn right onto Swann Road (located next to the Roadside Cafe) and drive for 1.2 miles, then turn right onto Brett Road and drive for 0.4 mile to Swann Lodge.
This walk is free and is being offered as part of the Housatonic Heritage Walk series. The walk is limited to 25 people and attendees are asked to pre-register below.
