About this Event
About this walk
Join us on the Saturday before Remembrance Sunday for a meaningful day on the wild western side of Kinder Scout. From Chunal Moor, we’ll cross towards Harry Hut and Mill Hill before climbing towards Sandy Heys and The Edge, taking in sweeping views, gritstone scenery and the stories of aircrew whose aircraft came down on these hills.
We’ll hear about an American Liberator that crashed near Mill Hill in 1944 and two RAF Sabres lost on western Kinder in 1954. There will be an opportunity for a quiet moment of remembrance at a safe stopping point. Any diversion to a wreck site is optional and will only take place if the route has been recced and conditions allow; we will not disturb aircraft debris. This is a proper November mountain day rather than a gentle introductory walk. Expect steep climbs, exposed moorland, potentially deep mud and changeable weather. We’ll walk together at a considered pace, but you should be comfortable with a full day in challenging upland terrain.
Distance: approx 13km / 8miles
Ascent: 569 m
Level of difficulty: Challenging — exposed upland moorland, steep climbs, wet peat and uneven gritstone in some places. Previous hillwalking experience and good fitness essential.
Expected duration: Approx. 5.5–7 hours, subject to weather, group pace and daylight. The route can be shortened if necessary, but please be prepared for a full day out on the hills.
Who will be your guide?
I’m Emily, founder of Peak Outdoor Community, and I’m a Mountain Leader based in Glossop at the edge of the Dark Peak. I’ve always been outdoorsy since being a young girl but hiking became a real obsession in 2019 when I started to go solo. I aim to inspire other women to learn the many benefits of exploring in the outdoors and I’m passionate about sharing my love for adventure with you!
