Some musicians become legends early in life. Others take a much longer road before their music finally finds its voice. Frank Morgan belonged to the latter.
For our 121st Live Concert Tribute at Long Waits, we turn to one of the most remarkable comeback stories in jazz history, and to an album that brought together two very different musical personalities: Frank Morgan and McCoy Tyner.
Born in 1933, Frank Morgan was a gifted alto saxophonist who emerged from the bebop generation, deeply influenced by Charlie Parker. As a young musician, he was considered one of the most promising successors to Bird, possessing the same remarkable fluency and instinct for improvisation. But his career took a very different turn. Years of drug addiction and imprisonment kept him away from the recording world for nearly three decades.
When Morgan returned to jazz in the mid-1980s, he was already in his fifties. His technique was still there, but something in his playing had changed. The fast bebop lines remained, yet his sound had become more patient, lyrical, and deeply personal. He no longer seemed interested in proving how many notes he could play. He had a lifetime of stories to tell.
In April 1987, Morgan entered Clinton Recording Studios in New York with the McCoy Tyner Trio, featuring Tyner on piano, Avery Sharpe on bass, and Louis Hayes on drums. The sessions became Major Changes, released on Contemporary Records.
It was a fascinating meeting of musical worlds. Morgan's playing came from the melodic language of Charlie Parker and the bebop tradition, while McCoy Tyner, whose powerful harmonic approach had helped shape the sound of John Coltrane's classic quartet, brought a broader, more modern musical landscape.
Rather than competing, the two voices found a beautiful balance. Morgan's warm, singing alto saxophone moved through Tyner's rich chords and restless rhythms, while the rhythm section gave the music both strength and freedom.
The album moves between familiar standards such as How Deep Is the Ocean, Emily, and All the Things You Are, and Tyner's own compositions, including Search for Peace and the appropriately titled Frank's Back.
Perhaps the title Major Changes says something beyond the music itself. For Morgan, it was another chapter in a life that had already gone through so many changes. For the listener, it is a chance to hear a musician who had survived his own history, now playing with a remarkable sense of clarity and purpose.
This week, the Long Waits Houseband Ensemble revisits Major Changes for Tribute #121. A record where bebop tradition meets the harmonic imagination of modern jazz, and where two great musical voices remind us that jazz is not only about what we play, but everything we have lived before playing it.
See you on this Friday and Saturday !!
