About this Event
What can a repaired book reveal about resilience? Join book conservator and artist Sara White of Alluvium Press & Bindery for a close look at the care, judgment, and material knowledge involved in preserving international 19th and early 20th century textile swatch books from the Textile Hive collection created by Andrea Aranow. Sara will discuss her work repairing special collection volumes from Japan, France, and the United States, including her approaches to damaged spines, distinctive binding structures, labels, and paper. She will also explore how conservation decisions can stabilize an object while retaining the marks of its history and use.
The swatch books hold layered records of textile production, design, trade, and material culture. Through before and after examples and repaired volumes from the collection, Sara will explore repair as a sustainable practice that keeps this knowledge accessible to future generations. Following the talk, participants will have time for questions, conversation, and a closer look at the books. Sara will also display and offer for sale a selection of her handmade cloth bound notebooks, which connect her background in weaving and textile pattern with contemporary bookbinding.
