The Artwork in the Exhibition
1) Transmutation of memories & stories

Artwork is made from a dataset of digitised analogue photographs (about 700), taken over 15 years ago, representing past experiences of UK and Greek life. Different sets of photographs are selected from this old memories dataset to enter into algorithms to create the artwork.

Working from the feelings initiated by each piece, three observers have constructed stories as accompaniments. This is to demonstrate the differences between human perception and experiences of feelings, and to encourage the viewer to stop, think and emotionally experience the artwork. What feelings/perceptions do you have as a viewer when looking at an art piece, and why?

"Story 1:

You don’t remember, do you? That we didn’t go home, then. We moved on, to another place. More people, they took photos, we took, too.

They wanted you and I was dancing. But you don’t remember, do you? When you made fun of my accent, when you made fun of my fall, when, again, I stood up and left.

You don’t remember, do you? As I don’t, either, why I am, still, here."

"Story 2:

Coral, clipping choral.

Gift of beef wrapped neatly in paper, a war birthday. A little bloody but still clean, carried and spoken clearly. “Of course, lass!”. I’m touched neatly and tidily, simple easy humanity. But hormones still permeate and supersede even this comfortable, orderly, nice world, pulling us forward beyond ourselves. “God only knows, I’m sure” – oh, but I know, always here, in your blood. Here with drives and with watching eyes.

Holy imago, bless all our efforts. Speak to us through the rubble we create. Our receptor cells are excited for your touch, our bodies are your tools, your toys and your weapons. Create us, and throw away our intentions.

AMEN!"

2) The process of transmutation

Artwork is made from a dataset of digital photographs (over 3000), taken in the last year in the UK and Greece. The content captured in the UK is primarily flowers and in Greece sea/beaches/stairs and neighbourhoods in Ana's hometown. Additional captures of Ana performing transmutation poses in her hometown are included in the dataset. She has been working on processing events from the last few years.

3) Photobooth

A photo area would be organised for people to have their photo/s taken and entered into the algorithms. Participants might need to think of transmutation poses. A free art piece would be provided in the form of a digital image.

Performance: Building blocks & open floor dance on 21st of Wednesday 2022 from 7:30pm to 11pm
Choreographed by Marie Chabert

The evening offers two group improvisations and a duet with live music by Alex Paton. In addition there is the possibility for the audience to take part in a short creative workshop.

Inviting the spontaneous, the improvised and the choreographed, the performers navigate scores and respond architecturally to the space and to the audience.

The duet draws inspiration from The picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde and emphasis the moment of transmutation between the character and the painting, or between the visible and the hidden.

Music by Alex Paton

Alex is a musician and composer based in Paris. On hearing the 'Imperial March' in the Star Wars films at the age of seven, Alex was inspired to learn how to play an instrument. He now composes for a variety of cross media genres including theatre, film and dance. Recent collaborations have included scoring for a multitude of projects including award winning shows, these include English National Ballet, Alvin Ailey (Dance) , This Egg Theatre, Adverto films, Epheremal Ensemble, Fools Cap Theatre and more: http://www.alex-paton.com/

Alex uses the movement and the atmosphere in the space at the time to gather inspiration for the sounds, melodies and rhythms. He is aiming to obtain a balance between action and reaction. Searching for the right moments to follow the movers and other variations in the space, to aid them with what they are offering and to give them a musical (or soundscape) story to use as a base, but also to know the right moments to offer new musical energies and ideas to guide the movement and atmosphere in the room.

Choice of instruments for the night: vocals, Irish bouzouki or electric guitar, trumpet, a selection of flutes (Ney from Turkey, Quena from South America, and Lo whistle from Ireland), small percussions, a Frame drum and melodica.

Bio

Ana Tsifouti (Kavala, Greece) is a scientist and artist in the area of Imaging Science and Image Quality. She resides in London, UK. Ana holds a Bachelors’ degree in Imaging Science and a PhD in Image Quality, assessing security imaging systems for human consumption and optimising of automated algorithms, both from the University of Westminster in London. She has worked as a UK civil servant scientist, defining image quality and establishing testing methodologies for algorithms and human investigations (psychophysics) for police tasks. Ana has experience with two large technology companies, mainly working on Image Signal Processing Pipeline algorithms, and in a Startup as one of the main technical leads.

This is Ana's art exhibition entitled ‘Transmutation to Abstraction’ (Instagram: @anatsifouti.art). She utilises photographs and machine learning algorithms to produce abstract content. The way she selects the images to enter into the algorithms relate to over fifteen years experience in the area of imaging. She is experimenting with image quality attributes, content and psychological processes.

She is using herself as a perceptual-emotional-system to produce art in relation to existential experiences throughout her life (captured with images), personalised preference/style, and the state of developmental progress of brain process awareness and emotional needs.

This is Ana when she was at the middle of her PhD studies (2013), the aim was to capture the process of synthesising/understanding information. The images were captured using long exposure. The chosen poses in the pictures demonstrate difficulties, effort, support and growth. A different person might have chosen different poses.

Transmutation to abstraction (Poem) by Ana

Years of information is gathered in my body

Innate sensations, elementary sense impressions

Formation, deformation, projective transformations, co-existing impressions

360 degrees of visual information

The world appears illusionary

Experiences are not replicas but correlations to reality

In this structured society we are given alternatives to reality, substitutes

Dichotomy of situations, lived experiences are cultural experiences all situational experiences

I need random, foreign thoughts, senseless forms, new associations

Transmutation transmutation, combine, compute, comprehend the information

Transmutation transmutation, I had enough I need new form

Perceptions are the fingerprints of our unique individuality

Variations in stimuli, cause variations in perception, interpretation

Individuality constancy through experiences doesn’t exist

Transmutation transmutation shift my perception to a different form

Transmutation transmutation i don't want to rely on my old thoughts
