🎬 Transindia: Documentary Screening
Discover the stories, culture and lived experiences of India’s Hijra community.
Join us at Coreset for a screening of Transindia, a powerful 30-minute documentary by award-winning filmmaker Meera Darji.
Meera’s work is currently on show at Coreset in, Colour Amid Concrete, which centres the work and experiences of Gujarati women in India. Through her filmmaking, Meera shines a light on underrepresented communities, sharing stories that challenge perceptions and invite us to see the world through different perspectives.
Transindia explores the lives of transgender people, known as Hijras, in Gujarat, India. With a rich history rooted in Indian culture and ancient Hindu scriptures, Hijras once held respected positions in society. However, British colonial rule introduced laws that criminalised the community, contributing to generations of discrimination, exclusion and marginalisation.
Through intimate storytelling, the film offers a window into the community’s everyday lives, beliefs, traditions and struggles for acceptance and belonging. It invites us to listen, learn and reflect on identity, human rights and the importance of creating a society where everyone can live authentically and with dignity.
🏆 Award-winning filmmaking: Transindia received the Royal Television Society Award for Best Factual (Midlands) and Best Short Documentary at the Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival. Meera was also nominated for the Sky Atlantic Grierson Award.
