Traditional Irish Skib Basket Workshop

Learn the art of the traditional Irish skib basket, a rustic round basket historically used in Irish kitchens and gardens for draining potatoes, washing vegetables, and carrying produce from the garden to the table. Woven from natural willow using time-honored techniques passed down through generations of Irish basket makers, the skib is as beautiful as it is useful — equally at home holding fresh bread, fruit, or garden flowers.
This traditional form is close to my heart — I (Shannon) learned this weave through time spent studying with Irish basket makers, including master weaver Joe Hogan and Ciaran Hogan. Jesse was able to weave a skib in Edinburgh, Scotland. We're excited to share these techniques and a bit of that Irish basketry heritage with you.
In a single day, you'll learn to weave a sturdy round base and shape the sides using randing and staking techniques, finishing with a simple, elegant rim. This workshop is a wonderful introduction to basketry for newcomers, and a satisfying, meditative weave for experienced makers who want to add a classic form to their repertoire.
