Discover the distinctive drawing technique of trace monotype, sometimes known as oil transfer drawing, in this hands-on portrait workshop with artist Bill Platz.
Using printmaking ink or greasy drawing materials such as oil pastel or paint stick, participants will learn how to transfer a drawing from a tracing-paper plate onto paper, creating portraits with rich, expressive marks and unexpected textures.
The technique has a long history in artistic practice, notably used by Impressionist and Post-Impressionist artists including Paul Gauguin. Beyond creating beautiful works in their own right, trace monotype techniques can also be used by artists to transfer drawings onto canvas or board in preparation for painting.
Participants will create their own trace monotype portrait while learning the process and exploring its possibilities with Bill.
All materials are provided, and no prior drawing experience is required - just a willingness to experiment and enjoy.
Spaces are limited and bookings are essential.
Content advisory: The session will include a life model with partial nudity/costume.
Evening flow:
6:00-6:30 pm: Exclusive viewing of the exhibition
6:30 – 7:30 pm: Guided workshop exploring scumbling and methods of structure and atmosphere in portraiture
7:30 – 7:45 pm: Wrap-up conversation with the artist
