What does inclusive decision-making look like? How can we best deliver equity through policy and decision-making?
About this Event

The is organising a learning event on 30 October that will bring together residents, VCS organisations and decision makers from LBTH and other boroughs to share our experiences of influencing policy development and decision making.

We will be focusing on:

  • Addressing structural inequalities through strengthening public involvement in local decision making.
  • Coproducing solutions with residents to build thriving communities by strengthening community involvement in tackling structural inequalities.

What does inclusive decision-making look like? How can we best deliver equity through policy and decision-making?

Join community members, the equalities networks (in Tower Hamlets), voluntary and community sector organisations, Tower Hamlets council staff and other statutory partners to learn from the innovative Cornerstone Project; a two year project designed to influence inclusive decision-making in Tower Hamlets, working to address the inequalities in our systems, make our services more accessible and ultimately to improve outcomes for residents and save money.

This event is an opportunity to understand more about the model that has been developed, by the Cornerstone Project, for public sector bodies and voluntary sector partners wanting to work with local communities to address inequalities within policy making systems.

If you work in a local authority, the NHS or the voluntary sector and have a responsibility for or an interest in addressing equity of access, this event will support you to understand:

  • Co-production in action.
  • Intersectionality, it’s relevance to the equality impact assessment process, and how it can be applied to embedding a culture using evidence in decision making.
  • Ways to support staff to better address equality impact assessments and good practice in the equality impact assessment process.
  • Ways to support service users to engage with and use equality impact assessments to achieve better outcomes.
  • Opportunities to network and learn from partners

Our goal has been to ensure that all residents benefit from improved planning and decision-making that better reflects the experiences and needs of disadvantaged and marginalised communities in Tower Hamlets.

About us

is a partnership between Tower Hamlets Council for Voluntary Service (THCVS), the infrastructure organisation supporting the voluntary sector in London Borough of Tower Hamlets and six community groups and organisations.

This two year project, funded by The National Lottery, aims to influence more inclusive decision-making across public sector agencies in Tower Hamlets. The project aims to create a model for voluntary sector partnership for public sector bodies wanting to work with local communities to address inequalities within policy making services in Tower Hamlets.

In order to enhance decision-making and ensure it reflects the diverse experiences and needs of disadvantaged and marginalised communities, we have formed a resident panel comprised of two members for each of the seven organisations involved. Each organisation and their respective panel members, represent different protected characteristic groups within the borough.

As part of our aim to establish a diverse and representative panel capable of advocating effectively for residents’ voices, members of the community are recruited to share their personal experiences and help us. This was done with the intention to recruit representatives from each of our communities.

The Resident Panel is a fundamental part of the project and will aid us in helping curate effective inclusive decision making.

These organisations include:

  • Age UK East London: Representing the Older People’s Reference Group.
  • Tower Hamlets Inter Faith Forum: Representing faith communities.
  • Real: Representing people living with disabilities.
  • Account3: Representing the Women’s Network.
  • Limehouse Project: Representing the ethnic minority network.
  • Women’s Inclusive Team: Representing the ethnic minority network.
  • elop: Representing the LGBT forum.

Our goal is to ensure that all residents benefit from improved planning and decision-making that better reflects the experiences and needs of disadvantaged and marginalised communities in Tower Hamlets.

The panel members attending regular meetings to help co-design the EqIA evaluation process. Building a secure environment for open dialogue and participation is a fundamental part of our mission.
