About this Event
Set sail for treasure hunt. The bounty: genes that confer "Super Powers" (like surviving in boiling temperature). The idea* was to read all the genetic codes, DNA in mixed population of microbes collected from different seas, without distinguishing the constituent species amongst. Then, store the findings in public domains, where others could learn and perhaps might help to mitigate effects of climate change.
The master mind was none other than Craig Venter, a finisher of Human Genome Project. Only this time, the object gets smaller (marine microbe), the scope to go larger (seas of the world).
We will be reading non-fiction "Microlands”. We hope to learn about basics of DNA sequencing and discuss topics like: to whom the collected DNA belongs: the discoverer or the country where the life form lives at.Coincidentally, the United Nation Convention on Biological Diversity is going to be held around the same date.
Book title: Microlands - The Future of Life on Earth

*This launched a new field, called “metagenomics”. By the same principle, Leaf-branch Compost Cutinase (LCC) was to be found degrading PET plastics in 2012.
