Since establishing CVC's real-time water quality monitoring program in 2010, we have been building a progressively deeper understanding of our watersheds and their connection to Lake Ontario. What began with continuous environmental sensing revealed water quality dynamics and events that would otherwise have gone unnoticed.
Building on this foundation, a 2025 Canada-Ontario Agreement (COA) grant from the Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP) expanded our capabilities into predictive watershed and Lake Ontario water quality modeling under current and future climate conditions.
Most recently, in 2026, the establishment of a new genomics laboratory equipped with digital PCR and automated DNA extraction technology has enabled advanced analyses of E. coli, Enterococcus, and microbial source tracking (MST) to better understand fecal contamination sources and support recreational and drinking water safety.
Together, these initiatives reflect a journey toward intelligent waters, where real-time monitoring, predictive modeling, and genomic science converge to measure, anticipate, and interpret environmental change for healthier watersheds, a healthier Great Lakes ecosystem, and improved public health protection.
