The workshop will expose students to various points of view from the wide array of guitarists who have appeared at Harrison’s Alternative Guitar Summit Camp over the past decade, including Kurt Rosenwinkel, Gilad Hekselman, Ben Monder, Oz Noy, Kaki King, and Matteo Mancuso. We’ll discuss strategies to find your own sound, absorb a variety of influences, and shape them into a single personal vision. We’ll touch on the use of effects, the power of melody, and the basic fundamentals of time, tone, and feel.
About Joel Harrison
Guitarist, composer, arranger, lyricist, writer, educator, and vocalist Joel Harrison has “created a new blueprint for jazz” (New Orleans Times-Picayune). A Guggenheim Fellow (2010), his compositions have been commissioned by Chamber Music America, Meet the Composer, New Music USA, the Jerome Foundation, NYSCA, and the Mary Flagler Cary Trust, among others.
Harrison has composed for orchestra, string quartet, solo cello, piano and cello, and marimba, including the PASIC Award–winning solo work Fear of Silence. His notable jazz recordings include three editions of Free Country, Spirit House with Brian Blade, America at War for jazz orchestra, String Choir: The Music of Paul Motian, Search (a septet featuring Donny McCaslin), and Still Point Turning World (Whirlwind)—an expansive, uncategorizable meeting of jazz, Indian, and classical traditions featuring Anupam Shobhakar, Ben Wendel, Talujon Percussion, and V. Selvaganesh.
Harrison’s body of work connects multiple American traditions. While rooted in jazz, his music moves fluidly through classical, rock, country, and American roots music. The New York Times has described his work as “protean… brilliant.” He is also an active film composer, with credits including the Oscar-nominated Traffic Stop and the Sundance Award–winning Southern Comfort.
A former student of Jimmy Wyble, Mick Goodrick, Allaudin Mathieu, and Joan Tower, Harrison is the founder and director of the Alternative Guitar Summit, an annual festival devoted to innovative and unconventional guitar music. The Summit has featured artists such as Fred Frith, Nels Cline, Bill Frisell, Julian Lage, Michael Gregory Jackson, Mary Halvorson, and Pat Metheny, who has called it “one of the most interesting and distinguished forums for guitar on the planet.”
Harrison is the author of Guitar Talk: Conversations with Visionary Players, Pity the Genius, and Modern Jazz Standards for Guitar.
