Tim O'Reilly, Founder of O'Reilly Media, will give this year's the Annual Margaret Levi Lecture in Political Economy on "The Political Economy of Silicon Valley: From Value Creation to Value Extraction."
Silicon Valley once promised to create more value than it captured, building open networks that connected people, knowledge, and opportunity. Over the past several decades, that model has increasingly given way to extraction. Drawing on more than forty years as a technology entrepreneur and observer, this talk traces how the incentives of modern shareholder capitalism transformed the digital economy and asks whether the emerging AI economy will repeat the same trajectory. O'Reilly argues that AI offers a rare opportunity to redesign the rules of the game around openness, distributed innovation, and shared prosperity so Silicon Valley can once again create more value than it captures.
