About this Event
In this hands-on and introductory course, Jennie Mak (she/her/hers) will guide beginners through the strategy of Hong Kong-style mahjong all while you sip Lost Generation Beer and snack on 50Hertz peanuts! As a community leader in the mahjong community in the DMV, Jennie brings her Hong Kong roots and passion to this engaging and interactive class, creating a welcoming space for participants to learn, connect, and experience the cultural traditions of mahjong.
About our instructor, Jennie Mak
Jennie Mak is the founder of Mahjong United, a community project born from her love of teaching and storytelling through mahjong. She was raised in a mahjong-playing household in Hong Kong, where she learned the game from her parents, relatives, and neighbors. The sound of tiles being shuffled was part of everyday life, along with the noise, teasing, and stories traded across the table. When she moved to the United States for college, she brought the game with her and has been teaching it ever since and for more than two decades! She now teaches both kids and adults, using the game to connect generations and celebrate culture.

KAMA DC is a volunteer-run nonprofit that operates entirely on individual donations. In addition to mahjong skills learning, your $20 ticket includes one beverage at Lost Generation Brewing (nonalcholic included) and one snack from 50Hertz Tingly Foods. Any additional funds raised through this event will help support future KAMA DC programming. We appreciate your generosity—thank you for supporting our mission!
