About this Event

This course meets twice per class session. Please check the Agenda below for the dates included in each session. By purchasing a ticket, you are committing to attend all meetings included in that session. The title of the Agenda page will indicate which ticket to purchase for that session.

This is the exact same curriculum as the TIG 101 One-Day Edition but spread out over two 3-hour sessions instead of a single 5-hour session.
Instructor - Eden Attar @epifemmeology

Eden Attar is an installation artist and the former Artisans Asylum Metal Shop Lead. Her work has been supported by the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts, the Harvard ArtLab, the Harvard Ed Portal, and the Luminary St. Louis. Eden sees education as part of her artistic practice and is interested in anti-colonial, de-schooled, and non-hierarchical forms of teaching and learning.

Class Description

Welcome to TIG 101! This class is a quick introduction to the TIG welding process for those with little or no TIG experience. TIG has several advantages over other welding processes: it is clean, quiet, has no spatter or sparks, and can weld any weldable material, such as stainless steel, bronze, aluminum, and titanium. I highly recommend this class to first-time welders. TIG is very good at teaching what I consider the fundamentals of welding: knowing how to direct heat for an adequate bond, being able to see or otherwise perceive what you are doing, and knowing how to use this sensory input to inform torch settings, position, and speed.

Class environment: All people are welcome in this class, and an active effort will be made to be inclusive to all people. This class will not tolerate sexism, ableism, racism, homophobia, or transphobia. Welding is for everyone.

Available accommodations: people concerned about accessibility can reach out to set aside an extra 1 hour before the class to discuss accommodations at no additional cost

Material Fee

The materials fee for this class is $45. This is separate from the ticket price and is to reimburse the instructor for any tools or materials used in this class. This will be paid once, directly to the instructor at the start of the first class meeting. This instructor accepts cash but prefers payments through Venmo.

Class Goals

This class will focus on developing the coordination and knowledge needed to safely weld mild steel sheets, though this knowledge will be translatable to other shapes and varieties of metal.

Material Supplied

Students will be provided with safety glasses, welding helmets, jackets, gloves, tungsten electrodes, and practice pieces.

Students Should Bring

If you use glasses for reading or other close-up work, please bring them---TIG involves a lot of small detailed work. We have welding jackets for your upper body, but please cover all the skin on your lower body with clothing made of natural fibers (cotton, linen, wool, denim, etc.) and wear closed-toe shoes. Please do not wear loose-fitting clothes, please tie back long hair, and expect to remove any rings or dangling jewelry.

Prerequisites

Students must be 16 years old or older. Students under 18 must be accompanied by and under the direct supervision of an adult.
