Join us on Saturday, October 17 at 2 pm for a conversation about how artists find their way to the tools, materials, and processes that become uniquely their own. Presented in conjunction with the Museum's '51st Juried Annual,’ this panel discussion brings together exhibiting artists whose practices could hardly seem more different.Brian Pirman, an artist, graphic designer, and educator at St. Norbert College, works within the digital realm, shaping images through software before bringing them into physical form. He will discuss the tools in his digital toolbox and what the artist's hand, decision-making, and authorship mean in a practice where the tools themselves continue to evolve.
Mary Ellen Sisulak brings decades of experience working with leather through her Turtle Ridge Gallery into her fine art practice. Stretching leather over wood panel in place of traditional canvas, she forms, carves, paints, and embeds elements into its surface, so that the material itself becomes an active part of the image. She will share how deep knowledge of a material can be carried into an entirely new form of making.
Digital space and an unconventional physical material may seem worlds apart. Together, these artists reveal how lived experience shapes the visual language each ultimately develops.
The discussion will be moderated by Curator Suzanne Rose. The event is free and open to the public.
