About this Event
What is one thing you would always carry with you?
This interactive workshop invites participants to explore the emotional and often invisible aspects of identity, memory, and migration. Through a combination of reflection, creative practice, and shared dialogue, we will consider what we carry, both physically and internally, as we move through the world.
The session begins with a short presentation highlighting how artists have explored themes of memory, migration, and identity. Drawing on examples such as suitcase artworks, symbolic objects, and personal archives, we will examine how creative practices can make the unseen visible.
This is followed by a brief group discussion on the idea of “visible versus invisible baggage”, what we show to the world, and what we hold within.
Participants will then be guided through a 45-minute creative exercise. The facilitator will introduce the idea of a “packing list” as a conceptual and visual tool, combining words, symbols, and drawing. Participants will experiment with representing abstract ideas, such as memory, emotion, culture, and belonging, through visual language.
In the main creation phase (approximately 1 hour), participants will develop their own “What I Carry” piece using mixed media on A4 paper. This can include personal memories, emotions, cultural references, language, and elements of identity, both visible and invisible.
The workshop concludes with a group sharing and reflection. Participants are invited to share one element of their work, opening a collective conversation around what we carry and what often remains unseen by others.
