Remembrance, memory and the marks experiences leave behindHeld on Remembrance Day, this workshop will explore remembrance in a broad and inclusive way.
While the date provides the starting point, participants will not be required to focus specifically on war or military remembrance.
Instead, participants may choose to reflect on:
• a person
• a place
• a relationship
• a period of their life
• a community
• something they have lost
• something they want to remember
• or simply enjoy the process of creating without assigning personal meaning to the piece.
Participants will experiment with fabric dye using folding, tying, binding and resist techniques.
The process naturally creates unpredictable patterns, overlaps and marks, making it a useful way of exploring the idea that experiences leave different impressions behind.
Participants will be encouraged to experiment rather than work toward a perfect result.
The workshop aims to encourage:
• experimentation
• sensory and hands-on creativity
• reflection on memory and connection
• acceptance of unpredictable creative outcomes
• curiosity around colour, pattern and process
The session can be reflective without requiring participants to talk about grief, loss or personal experiences.
All Materials supplied.
Participants will leave with their own hand-dyed fabric piece.
The fabric can be displayed as artwork or later used for sewing, patchwork, bags, cushions, keepsakes or other projects.
Workshops wrap up around 12pm ish with the option to keep creating or stay on for social time or other activities until 2pm.
Workshop Approach
Across all three workshops, the focus will be on participation rather than artistic ability.
Activities can be adapted for different levels of confidence, concentration, fine-motor ability and creative experience.
Participants will always have the option to:
• follow the suggested activity
• simplify the activity
• create something different using the available materials
• participate without discussing the meaning behind their work.
The intention is to create workshops that feel welcoming, practical and creative while still allowing space for reflection and connection.
