Kia ora e te whanau! This is the final day for the community weeding competition: The Thorburn 1k. Evergreen buckthorn - or Rhamnus alaternus - is a big threat to te taiao on Te Raekaihau. It prevents native plants from establishing by forming dense stands of salt and wind tolerant bushes that grow on steep escarpments. Join us to help remove 1000 of these plants across two weeding sessions! A point schedule helps you to get motivated and compete for the highly coveted Thorburn 1k medal.
Please meet at the intersection of Te Ranga-a-Hiwi and Ruru tracks. We will provide tools and gloves but please bring your own if you have some. We will finish at the Alice Krebs lodge for hot drinks and kai and there will be time for community consultation.
In the event of bad weather forecast, the day will be moved forward to Saturday.
