DORCHESTER ASSOCIATION EVENTJoin us for a fascinating talk by Ben Buxton, a fifth-generation descendant of Thomas Fowell Buxton, exploring the life and legacy of this remarkable Dorset figure.
Thomas Fowell Buxton was a Weymouth MP, social reformer and prominent campaigner against slavery. His political career was driven by a strong commitment to social justice, and he played an important role in the campaign that ultimately led to the abolition of slavery throughout much of the British Empire.
The talk will also explore Buxton’s ambitious Niger Expedition of 1841–1842, an attempt to establish legitimate trade and encourage the suppression of the slave trade in West Africa. The expedition faced enormous challenges, particularly the devastating effects of disease, and was ultimately cut short.
With the unique perspective of a direct descendant, Ben Buxton will bring this fascinating and complex character to life, examining his achievements, ambitions and enduring legacy.
Discover the story of a Weymouth MP whose campaign against slavery extended far beyond the shores of Dorset.
