This Is Us LGBTQ+ | a celebration of queer resilience

What is this celebration?

Outside of Pride Month, there is a lack of public events focused on historical conversation, preservation, and celebration of queer folks. “This Is Us LGBTQ+” fills the gap, mounting annually each October as a cultural pillar for LGBTQ+ History Month to bring together multigenerational community members and allies alike.

The daytime celebration showcases multigenerational queer voices through two visual-centered workshops & a multidisciplinary arts cabaret. Each event focuses on anecdotes and artistic expressions surrounding queer history and resilience.

Upon arrival to workshops and the cabaret, attendees receive a take home memento: the “This Is Us LGBTQ+” journal, bookmark, and pen package. It is a living, breathing engagement tool for attendees, becoming historic documentation. At the end of workshops and the cabaret, attendees also have the option to place their package in a donation container given to GLAMA (Gay and Lesbian Archives of Mid-America), helping document and preserve the historic event.

Who made this event possible?

• LSH Productions - a Kansas City-based production company creating thought-provoking experiences.
• Music to Life - connecting socially conscious musicians with mentors, resources and training needed to realize bold visions for community change.
• Rocket Grants (a program from Charlotte Street Foundation, Spencer Museum of Art, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts) - a grant program providing direct funding to artists in the Kansas City region who are creating exceptional, under-the-radar, and artist-centered projects in public spaces.
