About this Event
Chris Pegler first had land (4 acres of reclaimed quarry) and instead of having a lawn mower or horses or hay she and Steve learned how to rear sheep (Jacobs). This led to the problem of what to do with the fleece and that led to Chris learning to spin, which led to weaving and all manner of other crafts based on wool use.
At this Thinking Thursday Chris will talk about the benefits of wool and will be bringing along samples of different types of native breed wool as well as alpaca, flax, cotton and silk, plus some recycled plastic bottle fibre yarn she has spun. Each fibre type has its own eco-virtues (or detriments) but native wool breeds (use and reuse) are the focus of this talk. How Chris prepares, spins and uses them and how she manages any waste products from processing wool is the main part. She will also touch on the other ways in which craftspeople and artists, construction and other industries use wool. Chris can spin virtually any fibre (plant or animal - although some are definitely better suited) and has some wacky tools for doing so. She has a cloth bag which bears the slogan 'Spinning: Esoteric hobby or kick-ass post-apocalyptic skill?'. She thinks its both and will explain why.
