About this Event
Linda Edwards is an artist based in Shropshire with a background in illustration.
"My exhibition for J/M Gallery this November is called The Vibrant Air. My paintings celebrate nature and portray an imaginary world where animals, birds and humans live in harmony in a rich tapestry of trees and plants. Birds are so important to me. They almost universally symbolise the soul or anima, and have a lightness of being in the vibrant air."
“In this collection I am working on a larger scale and for the first time I am introducing figures. My new collection is centred on forests and mountains under the sun and the moon. The viewer is subliminally reminded of ancient motifs and symbols. They run through the centuries to now, anchoring the present moment.”
“Poetry is often a starting point. I keep sketchbooks, which I use to explore ideas. I spend a lot of time on the initial composition, playing with strong overall shapes to draw in the viewer. This is especially true of my watercolour and gold leaf paintings, as decisions have to be made early on. As the work develops, it becomes more complex. A narrative is often revealed in details that you might not at first see.
Medieval, Indo-Persian, and early Renaissance art inspire me greatly. Also I look to sacred geometry and Islamic patterns, exploring natural forms, such as flowers or stars.”
"In this painting, called The Vibrant Air, the enigmatic figures are musicians from a mythical culture. Music and poetry can form strong connections between people. Here, deep in this beautiful forest, we find a spring, the source of the river. Drinking from the spring is the raven; the symbol of wisdom and transformation, and the lion symbolising strength."
“Repetitive patterns form an important part of my paintings. Creating these patterns takes a long time, and the process becomes almost meditative. This energy is held in the painting and resonates strongly with the viewer. The work is unified by adding pure gold leaf, often applied as a background and inscribed. I love the way the gold catches the light. The moment the gold is finished, the whole painting comes to life.”
Linda has shown at the India Design Fair in New Delhi with Ojas Art and in various galleries around the UK. She was awarded the Royal Watercolour Society Dry Red Press Award in 2017 and in 2022, she was a finalist in the Women United Art Prize, Painting and Drawing category. She exhibited at Art Mumbai in November 2025 with Ojas Art.
Linda held a solo show, The Breath of the World, at J/M Gallery, London, in October 2025 and is delighted to be returning to J/M Gallery this November with a new collection.
The exhibition will run from 26th November until 1st December 2026
