theShift + Visibility
When the search to be seen becomes the journey to be known.
This month’s speakers are Silly Genius, illustrator, muralist, and founder of All City Art Club, and Shannon Wright, illustrator, cartoonist, and award-winning picture book author.
This month’s conversation centers on visibility. Not as a metric. Not as a follower count or a room full of faces who recognize your name. But as the deeper, more complicated question of whether the version of you that the world sees is the version of you that actually exists.
As Black creatives, we learn early how to be visible... how to show up, stand out, and take up space in rooms that weren’t designed with us in mind. But there’s a difference between being seen and being known. Between building a presence and building a truth. Between the work that gets you in the door and the work that feels like yours.
This conversation explores what visibility actually means when you strip away the performance of it, how you align the work you make with the person you are, what it costs to be visible in the wrong way, and what it looks like when being seen and being known finally feel like the same thing.
