Therapeutic Assessment provides a bridge between observation, theory, and practice, helping therapists move beyond presenting behaviours to understand the deeper story of each child. It supports greater attunement and, with this, the ability to hold more complex and difficult narratives.This training workshop will include:
- Considering the initial referral and parent interviews—really getting to grips with the information that is being shared, both directly and indirectly.
- Exploring the individual's background and considering how past experiences may be influencing the here and now.
- Seeing beneath the surface of the child or young person in the therapeutic space—noticing the finer details and reflecting on what informs our understanding.
- Integrating child development theory, attachment theory, and neuroscience into assessment and formulation.
- Considering Systems Theory: exploring what is happening externally within the child's family, wider community, and relationships; examining patterns of communication within these systems; and linking these understandings with policy, practice frameworks, and multi-agency working.
By integrating multiple theoretical perspectives, practitioners will leave with greater confidence in developing meaningful assessment frameworks and delivering interventions that truly meet the needs of children and young people.
