Welcome to The World of Natural Art Exhibition Te Ao Whakaaturanga Toi Taiao
Showcasing over 50 years of devotion, patience and legacy by Tōrere Artist & Kaumātua
John Manuhiri Vokaty (Ngai Tai, Ngati Manu).
Brought up on the East Coast of Tōrere in the teachings of the old world by his grandparents, John holds a profound relationship with the whenua and moana. When Tangaroa moves across the coast, John receives the heavy driftwood left behind as a sacred gift, patiently hand sanding each piece over months and years to reveal the hidden spirit, patterns, and stories within the wood.
This exhibition is a window into a way of living and a generational connection to the natural world that is slowly becoming harder to find.
