The Witches of Eastwick (M, 1987) Presented in 35mm Film by The Revival House PerthIn the sleepy Rhode Island town of Eastwick, three lonely, dissatisfied women—Alexandra (Cher), Jane (Susan Sarandon), and Sukie (Michelle Pfeiffer)—unknowingly conjure a mysterious stranger, Daryl Van Horne (Jack Nicholson), through their shared, half-joking wish for the perfect man. Daryl's arrival unleashes long-dormant magical abilities within the three friends, awakening their latent witchcraft as they're drawn into an increasingly seductive and chaotic entanglement with the charismatic, devilish newcomer. As the women's newfound powers and passionate affairs with Daryl bring both liberation and escalating chaos to their once-quiet lives, they must eventually reckon with the true, malevolent nature of the man they've summoned, drawing on their combined strength and sisterhood to confront the darker consequences of what they've unwittingly unleashed.
Director George Miller adapts John Updike's novel into a gleefully outrageous supernatural comedy that blends female empowerment with devilish mischief and visual extravagance. Jack Nicholson delivers a deliciously over-the-top performance as the devilish Daryl, relishing every ounce of the character's seductive menace and gleeful excess, while Cher, Susan Sarandon, and Michelle Pfeiffer bring genuine chemistry and comic timing to their trio of awakened witches. Miller's kinetic direction embraces the film's supernatural spectacle with visual inventiveness, staging increasingly elaborate set pieces as the women's powers and the consequences of their entanglement with Daryl escalate. Blending broad comedy, genuine horror elements, and a subversive feminist undercurrent about female desire and autonomy, The Witches of Eastwick remains a distinctive, wickedly entertaining entry in supernatural comedy cinema.
