The Witches of Belvoir – Adult Storytelling
This Halloween, join us at Grantham Museum at 3pm for the darker and more detailed telling of one of Lincolnshire’s most notorious historical tales: The Witches of Belvoir.
In 1618, Joan Flower and her two daughters, Margaret and Philippa, were accused of witchcraft following the mysterious deaths of two young members of the Manners family at Belvoir Castle.
But what really happened?
Were Joan and her daughters practising witchcraft, or were they simply wise women caught up in fear, superstition and accusations? Did they really place a curse on the Earl and Countess of Rutland, or was there another reason for the family’s tragedy?
Were the two boys poisoned? Did the women have a motive for revenge? And how much of the story can we actually prove?
Join us as we delve deeper into the accusations, the evidence, the beliefs of the time and the events surrounding the infamous Belvoir witch trials.
With the eerie sounds of our Compton Organ adding to the atmosphere, this is a Halloween storytelling session for adults who enjoy their history with a darker side.
Hear the evidence, explore the theories and decide for yourself… were they witches, wise women, or victims of the times they lived in?
Come along and uncover the darker side of the story of the Witches of Belvoir.
