If you're living in NYC, chances are that you ride the subway! But did you know all the incredible art that you might be missing without even realizing it? Join us as Museum Educator and Guide Kristin McCollum opens our eyes to the most underappreciated art museum in the world!
Millions of people ride the subway every day without realizing they're walking through a museum full of art and history, containing countless stories of New York City. This talk digs deep on the history of the NYC subway and why we have such an extensive and diverse amount of art in our stations.
Kristin McCollum is a museum educator, guide, actor, and improviser. She creates and leads tours at the New York Transit Museum, Morgan Library & Museum, and the Museum of the City of New York. When she's not in a gallery or subway station, she's teaching and performing improv with Improvolution in the West Village or making NYC history and art videos as NerdingOutOnNYC. She and her trash dog Rory are proud residents of Hell's Kitchen.
"...my main goal is to make people more aware of the art as they're commuting and how deep the stories go. The history of the NYC subway system is also so unique and fascinating - and will hopefully make the hodgepodge nature of it more endearing to people. Introducing the less well-known artists that are featured has been very rewarding, and highlighting New York stories that may have been lost through time but are represented in the art is really cool."
We'll explore:
- How the art in the subway stations came to be
- The history behind public art in NYC
- The artists behind some of the fantastic pieces you may walk by every day
