🧠In an ever changing and even more chronically online world, how does the culture of screens affect our brains and mental health? Get ready to confront these questions at The Wisdom Bar! 🧠
We all see the crazy fan stories and comments on social media, or the "stalkers" online. But what does this mean for fan culture as a whole? This talk delves into the beginning of parasocial relationships, or the illusory relationships between a fan and an internet persona, celebrity, or character. When did it start, and will it ever end? Why do people fantasize that Harry Styles will adopt them? The world of media psychology awaits.
From media psychology expert Kiann Rami: "My name is Kiaan Rami, and I am a current graduate student finishing my thesis in New Paltz. I have a love of all things psychology, history, and media-oriented. I also love being a great big nerd, and enjoy my evenings reading books and watching TV with my lovely partner!"
We'll explore:
- What is the reality of fan culture beyond sparse and inflammatory media coverage?
- Why do we feel uncomfortable when other people are "ultimate fans" but we are okay with dedication to our own favorite people or media?
- How is our mental health affected by the ever more online culture of our world?
