“I hope you will do what is Just and right to a poor and infirmily poor man”: The Voices of the South Wales Poor, 1834 to 1871
Join Dr Paul Carter of the National Archives and discover more about their new project, A Century of Struggle: Pauperism and the New Poor Law in Wales, 1834-1930.
This talk will focus on the lived experience of the 19th century Welsh poor with an emphasis on the Southern Welsh counties. With the introduction of the New Poor Law in 1834 we will ask how the poor responded to the overall cuts to relief, the rise of the Victorian workhouse system and the idea that deterrence was to be woven into the very idea of welfare. We will look at the New Poor Law through multiple voices contained in contemporary letters written by paupers, the wider poor and those willing to be their advocates. The poor were not reticent to set out what they considered ‘fair and just’ and their letters were attempts (sometimes successful) to hold local poor law authorities to account.
Paul Carter is the Principal Records Specialist (Collaborative Projects) at The National Archives and leads, with the Aberystwyth University and Nottingham Trent University, the Arts and Humanities Research Council funded project A Century of Struggle: Pauperism and the New Poor Law in Wales, 1834-1930.
This event will be held in person at Glamorgan Archives.

Ymunwch a Dr Paul Carter o’r Archifau Genedlaethol i ddarganfod mwy am y prosiect newydd, Canrif o Frwydro: Tlodi a’r Ddeddf Dlodi Newydd yng Nghymru, 1834-1930.
Bydd y sgwrs yma yn canolbwyntio ar brofiadau byw’r tlawd yng Nghymru yn y 19eg ganrif gyda phwyslais ar siroedd y de. Gyda chyflwyniad y Ddeddf Dlodi Newydd ym 1834 gofynnwn beth oedd ymateb y tlawd i’r toriadau i gymorth, i system tlodai Oes Fictoria, a’r syniad bod ataliaeth yn rhan annatod o lesiant. Byddwn yn edrych ar y Ddeddf Dlodi Newydd trwy’r amrywiaeth o leisiau sydd i’w ddarganfod o fewn y llythyrau ysgrifennwyd gan y tlawd a’r rhai oedd yn siarad o’u blaid. Nid oedd gan y tlawd ofn lleisio beth roeddent yn ei gweld yn deg ac yn gyfiawn ac roedd eu llythyrau yn ceisio (weithiau’n llwyddiannus) i alw i gyfrif yr awdurdodau deddf dlodi leol.
Paul Carter yw’r Prif Arbenigwr Cofnodion (Prosiectau Cydweithredol) yn yr Archifau Morgannwg. Mae’n arwain, gyda Phrifysgolion Aberystwyth a Nottingham Trent, y prosiect, Canrif o Frwydro: Tlodi a’r Ddeddf Dlodi Newydd yng Nghymru, 1834-1930, cefnogwyd gan Gyngor Ymchwil y Celfyddydau a’r Dyniaethau.
Bydd y digwyddiad yma yn cael ei chynnal mewn person yn Archifau Morgannwg.
