'The Vigilant' Closing Art Reception

a mixed media abstract exhibition, by artist john guillory, that invites viewers to look beyond the surface, to question what is presented, examine what is concealed, and resist the temptation to accept every image, narrative, or message at face value.
guillory's abstract practice draws inspiration from the visual residue of everyday life: old walls, graffiti, torn posters and newspapers, and ruined landscapes. these inspirations become more than aesthetic references. they suggest a world in which information, imagery, advertising, and opinion, are continually layered over one another to persuade cultural perception.
we live surrounded by images, photographs, headlines, advertisements, social media posts, political messaging, entertainment, news, algorithms, and carefully constructed narratives. we are constantly being fed what to look at and more importantly, what not to consider as truth.
presentation can influence perception. the vigilant questions the framing and examines all layers. this exhibition is not about what to believe, but a manifesto to become more conscious of how we decide what to believe.
the layered style of the artwork serves as a metaphor for the layers through which we experience the world. this is a call to maintain curiosity in a culture that has become saturated with information, and to preserve the need to investigate what exists beneath the visible.
