About this Event
This Is Not A Theatre Company presents The Uncanny Market, a new site-specific play that takes place inside an actual U-Haul truck parked on the streets of New York City.
The United States has more self-storage space per capita than any other country in the world. Much of that "stuff" is moved to and from in U-Haul trucks. And when people die, their children are often tasked with cleaning out houses, hiring trucks and dumpsters, and deciding what to do with a lifetime's collection of things to which sentiment has been attached.
The Uncanny Market turns that familiar moving truck into an intimate theatre. Inside the truck, partakers are invited to buy, sell, and circulate objects, confronting questions we rarely sit with: What makes an object valuable, and what makes it trash? What do we keep, and what do we discard? Where does our garbage go, who ends up living among it—and who can afford not to?
Rather than sitting at a distance and watching a fictional world unfold, audiences enter the truck and become part of the market itself. Objects acquire and lose value as they circulate from person to person, making the audience complicit in the systems of possession, exchange, attachment, and disposal that the play investigates.
