About this Event
Scotland, 1933. As the world waits on the threshold of war, Ayrshire-born Robert 'Bobby' MacBryde and Robert Colquhoun meet at the Glasgow School of Art, and straight away become inseparable. Both from working class backgrounds, both prodigious in their talent, both overfond of a drink and a fight, these boot-black-haired painters become the toast of bohemian London and Europe. In a vivid act of revival, Damian Barr writes these two distinct personalities back to life in his novel The Two Roberts, which traces the radical arc of their relationship and careers, their rise to artistic stardom and the sad fade that followed, as they lost everything but each other.
Damian Barr is an award-winning writer and broadcaster, the author of an acclaimed memoir, Maggie & Me, and debut novel, You Will Be Safe Here. He'll be discussing The Two Roberts in conversation with - who else but - Robert Diament, host of the Talk Art podcast and Director of Carl Freedman Gallery and Counter Editions.
