Toi Whakaari: NZ Drama School presents our graduation production of The Threepenny Opera, a play with music based on John Gay’s The Beggar’s Opera, by Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill in collaboration with Elisabeth Hauptmann. English translation by Simon Stephens.
Set among the beggars, thieves and corrupt officials of London, The Threepenny Opera follows the notorious criminal Mack the Knife as he marries into the family that controls the city's beggars, finding himself hunted by in-laws, police and old flames alike.
Told through Kurt Weill's jazz-inflected, cabaret-style score, The Threepenny Opera is a sharp, funny and unsettling satire of capitalism and corruption that remains as cutting today as it was in 1928.
