The Bert C. Bach Written Word Initiative presents "The Tamara Session in Appalachian Writing" with Marc Harshman and Erin Miller Reid. We welcome both writers on campus for two session: a roundtable discussion and audience Q&A, followed by a reading from both writers. This event honors the support of ETSU alum and author Tamara Baxter.On Monday, September 28th, in the New Academic Building Performance Lab (106) from 1:00PM to 1:30 PM, there will be time for refreshments, socializing, and listening to live music.
1:40PM to 3:00PM, join us for a roundtable discussion with both writers, with an audience Q&A to follow.
From 3:10PM to 4:30 PM, the writers will give a reading of both of their works.
Atlas Books will be selling books at both sessions.
About Marc Harshman: Harshman’s collections of poetry include Woman in Red Anorak, winner of the Blue Lynx Prize [Lynx House/University of Washington], Believe What You Can, [WVU Press] winner of the Weatherford Award, and Following the Silence, Press 53. Dispatch from the Mountain State was published this past year by WVU Press. Harshman is also the author of fourteen nationally acclaimed children’s books including The Storm, a Smithsonian Notable Book for Children. In 2024 he was named Appalachian Heritage Writer by Shepherd University joining past nominees Barbara Kingsolver, Henry Louis Gates, Nikki Giovanni, Charles Frazier, and others. He is also co-winner of the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Award and holds degrees from Bethany College, Yale Divinity School, and the University of Pittsburgh. Harshman was appointed Poet Laureate of West Virginia in 2012.
About Erin Miller Reid: Erin Miller Reid is a physician, writer, and narrative medicine practitioner originally from southeastern Kentucky and now living in Tennessee. Her work has appeared in North Carolina Literary Review, Still, Appalachian Review, Women Speak: Women of Appalachia Project, Pine Mountain Sand & Gravel, 100 Days in Appalachia, and the anthology Troublesome Rising: A Thousand-Year Flood in Eastern Kentucky. Her debut novel is But For Fortune.
