Every day, forty-three million Americans, including eleven million children under the age of 18, face the harsh realities of poverty. Many more have incomes above the poverty line, but still low enough that programs like food stamps and Medicaid are needed to make ends meet. The recent economic downturn has seen unemployment rates rise and the use of emergency food pantries increase.
It's hard for those of us who have sufficient resources to truly grasp the daily struggles of families living in these conditions—the weight of the decisions they have to make, the fears that loom over them, and the frustrations they endure.
The Stretch Economic Reality Simulation provides participants with the opportunity to assume the role of a low-income family member living on a limited budget. The experience is divided into four 15-minute sessions, each representing one week in which you must navigate the challenges of providing for your family and maintaining your home.
Together, we can develop a deeper understanding and empathy for those who live this reality every day.
