The Strange Death of the GB Power Market

10th December 2026, 1pm-2pm, In person

Adam Bell, Partner, Stonehaven

The power market in Great Britain has operated in its current form since the early 2000s. It is a model based upon self-dispatch and bilateral contracting between generators and retailers.

However, starting in the 2010s a range of interventions have slowly distorted trading behaviour in the market, leaving pockets of considerable market power where various generators are making a small fortune. Along with operability issues, the case for reform is pressing. This talk will delve into the history of the market, how it has changed and what its future may hold.

Adam is a partner at Stonehaven, a strategic communications consultancy. He joined from BEIS, where as Head of Energy Strategy he worked on the 2020 Energy White Paper, and in earlier roles on heat decarbonisation strategy and on CFD auction design. He is one of Britain’s leading experts on energy and decarbonisation policy and is regularly featured in print and broadcast media.
