Venice is one of the world’s most captivating cities, a place where history, art and engineering meet on the water.
This course explores the history of an independent Venice, extraordinary in its length and magnificence. The city’s architecture spans great periods of history with remarkable buildings of distinctive Venetian design, all of which had to overcome the challenges of construction in the lagoon.
You will explore some of Venice’s most celebrated landmarks, including the Basilica of San Marco, the Doge’s Palace, Jacopo Sansovino’s Library of St Mark, the churches of Andrea Palladio and Baldassare Longhena’s great church of La Salute. Each offers a window onto a different age, from Byzantine splendour and Venetian Gothic to Renaissance elegance and Baroque drama. You will understand how those buildings tell the story of a republic whose wealth, power and imagination shaped a city unlike any other.
Whether you have visited Venice, dream of going, or simply enjoy art, architecture and history, this course will help you see the city with fresh eyes. Your tutor, Keith, will guide you to a richer understanding of how beauty, ambition and practical invention came together to create one of Europe’s most remarkable urban landscapes.
This is a live, tutor led course. Learning with like-minded people, there will be lots of opportunities to share your own knowledge and ideas and to hear from others.
No previous knowledge is needed, just an interest in Venice and a willingness to explore and share ideas.
