Hosted by The Hopkins Review and its Stephen Dixon Fiction Prize, celebrate Dixon's work and legacy with short readings by the JHU Writing Seminars, Hopkins Review, and Baltimore writing communities, and enjoy a reception with Dixon's fans, friends, and family.
The Writing Seminars and The Hopkins Review at Johns Hopkins University are honored to celebrate Dixon's legacy; this year marks the 5th year of THR's Stephen Dixon Fiction Prize, made possible alongside the Anne Frydman Translation Prize by the generous support of Dixon's children, Antonia and Sophia Frydman. This event is supported by an Artistic Lens Award from the JH150 Sesquicentennial Awards Program, which supports ideas that engage the Hopkins community with artistic and creative offerings exploring the university’s past, present, and future. Dixon taught in the JHU Writing Seminars for nearly 30 years, during which he mentored generations of writers.

McSweeney's is publishing The Stephen Dixon Collection, which includes two unpublished works by the late award-winning experimental fiction writer Stephen Dixon, as well as a posthumous relaunch of some of his major works, that will roll-out over the next three years. Stephen Dixon is remembered and celebrated not only for his highly praised novels Frog (British American Publishing, 1991), Interstate (Henry Holt, 1995), and Gould (Henry Holt, 1997), but also for his wide swath of experimental short fiction. After a career spanning six decades, Dixon, who passed away in 2019 at the age of 83, left behind a lasting impact on his writing students at Johns Hopkins University, as well as a legacy of 17 novels and more than 700 short stories, including a trove of unpublished works that greatly deserve readers and recognition.
Made possible thanks to a collaboration between McSweeney’s, The Dennis & Victoria Ross Foundation, and Dixon’s family, the first part of the publication roll-out will be this October, 2026 with Goodbye to Goodbye, a collection of selected stories (previously published) with an introduction by J. Robert Lennon, and previously published novels I and End of I as paperback volumes. Half Stories, Full Novel, an unpublished novel, and a republication of Frog will be released in October 2027. And lastly with great anticipation, Dixon’s collection of unpublished stories Out of Time will be published in October 2028 along with the republication of Interstate.
