🎸 DETROIT PUNK HISTORY COMES ALIVE!
THE SONG OF HIAWATHA + LIVE PERFORMANCE BY CINECYDE

📅 Friday, November 6, 2026 | 7 PM
📍 Detroit Film Theatre at the Detroit Institute of Arts

Join us for a special evening of film and live music celebrating one of Detroit's most colorful and influential underground figures, Hiawatha Bailey!

The Song of Hiawatha: The Life and High Times of the First Black Hippie, directed by Jeffrey Wengrofsky, traces Bailey's remarkable journey through Detroit and Ann Arbor's counterculture, political activism, and underground music scenes of the 1960s and 1970s.

Featuring rare archival footage, photographs, and interviews with Iggy Pop, Patti Smith, Wayne Kramer, John Sinclair, Niagara Detroit, Cheetah Chrome, and others, this documentary brings an extraordinary chapter of Detroit's cultural history to the screen. The soundtrack features music by the MC5, The Rationals, Cult Heroes, Static, and Pure Hell.

🎸 SPECIAL LIVE PERFORMANCE!

Detroit punk pioneers CINECYDE, celebrating 50 years of independent music, will kick off the evening with a live set introducing the film, featuring Hiawatha Bailey joining the band on vocals for part of the performance!

Formed in 1976, Cinecyde continues to carry the spirit of Detroit's original punk scene forward with Gary Reichel, Jim Olenski, Skid Marx, and Dan Allen.

This is a rare opportunity to experience Detroit underground music history both on the screen and live onstage, with some of the people who helped make it.

Don't miss this special night of Detroit music, film, and countercultural history!

🎟️ Tickets: $11.50 general admission | $9.50 DIA members, seniors, and students
