One night only! Sat DEC 19TH at the Rialto Club at Hotel Indigo, Athens! Come enjoy an evening of great music with the Smillies and Terraplane Blue to celebrate the holidays.
The Terraplane Blue trio will start the night with a hot set of blues, classic rock and originals. They are known for their bedrock solid rhythm section of the exquisitely talented and versatile Dean Johnston on drums and the legendary John Straw on Fender bass, fronted by Doug Peters, a masterful guitarist who knows the value of tone, Style and taste.
Dennis and Janet Smillie will join forces with them for an exciting second set, bringing Janet's soaring vocals and Dennis' stellar guitar, lapsteel, and slide skills to the party (expect a possible surprise or two).
is a three-piece band brought together by Georgia guitarist Doug Peters with the aim of having a versatile blues-based group to perform original songs as well as traditional blues tunes and blues-rock songs. The band focuses heavily on the blues, but also may delve into other genres, Doug uses mainly vintage instruments and amps for great tone and precision without clutter. The highly-experienced rhythm section of John Straw on Fender Bass and Dean Johnston on drums is the solid foundation which combines with the guitar leads and vocals of Doug Peters to form the Terraplane Blue sound and groove. The band on occasion has other players on guitar, harmonica, or vocals that sit in and add a different dimension and capability to the sound. The members have a strong, life-long enthusiasm for the music and they love sharing that with an audience.
The Smillies, Janet (vocals) and Dennis (guitar/lapsteel) have been making music together for 30 years, from their days jamming at the famous club Johnny D’s in Boston, to fronting blues and classic rock bands in Philly, the Pocono Mountains, and for the last ten years here in Athens, as founding members of the Athens blues/rock band . Janet’s powerhouse vocals light up the stage, and Dennis’ unique finger picking and slide guitar stylings bring a new feel to blues classics.
