The Pinndarian Society presents: In late nineteenth-century Chatham, the Salvation Army’s marches, brass bands, and attacks on the drink trade provoked obstruction and sometimes serious violence. Members were met with obstruction, assault, and vicious beatings in in the streets. Their hymns were met with abusive songs, and their public preaching with organised disruption.
Dr Christopher de Coulon Berthoud draws on contemporary newspapers and court reports to reconstruct the struggle for Chatham’s streets and examine the interests that lay behind it. What connected these disturbances to the town’s public houses and licensed trade?
