But treating the spot that hurts only gets us so far.
The shoulder is a complex relationship between the scapula, humerus, clavicle, surrounding musculature, and the movement patterns that coordinate them. When something isn’t working well, understanding how the shoulder is moving—and why—can change the entire direction of your treatment.
The Shoulder Complex is an 8-hour, hands-on continuing education course designed to help massage therapists bridge the gap between anatomy, assessment, and treatment.
Rather than approaching the shoulder as a collection of individual muscles, we’ll look at how the entire complex functions together and learn to recognize movement patterns that can help guide more intentional manual therapy.
Throughout the day, you’ll learn and practice:
• Functional anatomy and biomechanics of the shoulder complex
• Palpation of key bony landmarks and musculature
• Normal scapulohumeral rhythm and common biomechanical deviations
• Active and passive range-of-motion assessment
• Painful Arc, Empty Can and Apley Scratch testing
• Using assessment findings to recognize functional limitations within your scope of practice
• Active and passive myofascial release
• Neuromuscular techniques
• Cross-fiber tendon work
• Gentle capsular techniques
• Facilitated stretching and PNF
• Selecting techniques based on what you find during assessment
• Basic client self-care recommendations
• Recognizing when referral is appropriate
The goal isn’t to turn massage therapists into diagnosticians.
It’s to help you become better at answering three questions:
What am I seeing?
What am I feeling?
And what does that information tell me about how I should treat?
You’ll work through common shoulder presentations while learning how to connect movement assessment, palpation, and manual therapy into a thoughtful treatment strategy.
Expect anatomy review, demonstration, assessment practice, guided hands-on instruction, and partner work throughout the day.
You’ll leave with more than a collection of shoulder techniques. You’ll leave with a framework for evaluating what is in front of you and making more informed treatment decisions while remaining firmly within the massage therapist’s scope of practice.
