The Shim Sham: Tap & Swing!
The Shim Sham was originally a tap routine, created by Leonard Reed and Willie Bryant that was picked up by dancers in the Savoy Ballroom and danced without tap shoes. In the 1980s, Frankie Manning re-introduced the routine to a new generation of lindy hoppers.
Why learn the tap version? It will help you to understand the rhythm of the swing shim sham
Why learn the swing version? It is danced all over the world at social swing dance events.
For all dancers, learning both versions provides you with ideas for variations - something we'll be playing with in the final session.
No experience needed.
Book the full series for the best price, or separately, as standalone workshops: 15 Sept, 20 Oct, 17 Nov, 8 Dec.
Schedule:
4pm - 5.30pm Workshop
5.30pm - 6pm Practice time
Each session will be led by primarily by either Lexi Bradburn (tap) or Nikki Santilli (swing/jazz) with the other teacher supporting.
Lexi Bradburn is the Rhythm Tap dance tutor at Morley College London and an independent teacher
Nikki Santilli is the Authentic Jazz dance tutor at Morley College London and an independent teacher/performer
What shoes to wear:
For Tap: If you don't have tap shoes, don't worry! Wear your usual dance shoes. However, we recommend heavier, hard-soled shoes or boots. Please avoid trainers.
For Swing/Jazz: Wear any shoes that do not grip the floor. Please do not wear tap shoes for this part of the class, as the swing shim sham has rhythm, but minimal sound.
*Tea and Water will be available, but please bring your own cups where possible. You're welcome to bring your own drinks & snacks
*Workshop provides free entry to Jazz & Jam, a relaxed gypsy jazz jam with social dancing 6-8pm
Venue: Hargrave Hall, Archway Hargrave Road N19 5SP.
2 min walk from Archway tube, 8 min walk from Upper Holloway overground
