The event will explore how we can lead literacy effectively across our schools, using evidence-based strategies to close reading gaps early.About this Event
Our aim is to bring together Reading and Intervention leads, SENCos, Teachers and Classroom Assistants from across KS2, 3 and 4 to explore how we can strengthen and secure reading skills throughout crucial transitional periods. The interactive session will explore practical approaches to closing reading gaps early, with a specific focus on how to adapt our approach for older learners, ensuring we protect the dignity of our students who require additional reading support, regardless of their age.
Who it’s for: Reading and Intervention Leads, SENCos, Teachers, Classroom Assistants
We will be looking specifically at:
- Teaching Phonics: Target foundational letter-sound mapping (phoneme-grapheme) for struggling readers to build automatic word recognition and reduce visual memorisation.
- Whole School Explicit Vocabulary Instruction: Embed cross-curricular morphology and syllabification to break down complex academic terms and remove vocabulary barriers in all subjects.
- Classroom Habits: Maintain high standards through supportive scaffolding and fast-paced, high-energy rehearsal routines that keep every learner engaged.
- Putting Strategies into Practice: Combine timely, data-driven targeted intervention with quality-first classroom teaching to build the reading fluency needed for independent comprehension.
