When Natives, Dutch, and English first encountered each other in the early seventeenth century, they met as fellow mariners. Despite the obvious differences between Europeans' ships and Natives' canoes, both peoples had seafaring cultures. Join us in welcoming Andrew Lipman, professor of history at Barnard College as he leads a discussion that explores how the maritime technologies, skills, and resources of these groups were central to understanding both conflicts and cooperation in the colonial Northeast.
