The story follows Paul Kemp, a 30-year-old, world-weary journalist who leaves New York for San Juan, Puerto Rico, to write for the San Juan Daily News—a struggling, chaotic English-language newspaper on the verge of bankruptcy. Kemp quickly falls into a routine dominated by cheap rum, sweltering heat, and a colorful cast of cynical, washed-up fellow reporters. He becomes entangled with Yeamon, a volatile and violent colleague, and Chenault, Yeamon’s beautiful and erratic girlfriend whom Kemp secretly desires.
The narrative shifts from drunken misadventures and bar fights with the locals to a deeper exploration of greed and American imperialism, as Kemp is courted by a public relations man to write glowing pieces for corrupt real estate developers looking to exploit the island
