About this Event
Recently, there is rapid surge of anti-immigrant sentiment among Japanese public. The first vivid sign of this surge was a sudden surge of the Sanseito, a new political party, which can be translated as "Japanese first Party". It showed the surprising success in the previous House of councillors' (now generally called as Senate) election. Now it occupies the critical mass of representatives and senators in the Diet.
With the surge of anti-immigrant sentiment, new prime minister, Sanae Takaichi, called for the general election and won a landslide victory for her public support. Now the Japanese government has introduced or will introduce various measures to restrict entry into Japan, acceptance of foreign resident, acceptance of permanent resident and facilitate the deportation of illegal immigrants. This caused serious controversies in Japan, since Japan's population is shrinking and Japan desperately need more foreign workers.
Dr. Matsui will explore the background for this surge of anti-immigrant politics and critically examine various new measures to restrict foreign immigrants in Japan.
🍣 Food and drinks will be provided!
