The Richard Burton Annual Lecture 2026
'Stride to Modernism': A Personal Journey Through Jazz Piano - Joe Webb
Join us on the anniversary of Richard Burton’s 101st birthday.
In this lecture, Neath-born pianist Joe Webb reflects on the influences that shaped his development into an award-winning jazz pianist. In tracing some of the musicians who inspired him, Joe will explore the evolution of jazz piano from the early twentieth century to the 1960s: from Scott Joplin to Bud Powell, Mary Lou Williams to Hazel Scott, and Jelly Roll Morton to Herbie Hancock. Along the way, he will demonstrate key stylistic innovations and perform works that have become cornerstones of the jazz canon. Having devoted the past decade to his career as a performer, Joe looks forward to sharing his musical journey in a different capacity through this unique combination of performance and conversation.
Joe Webb is one of the most formidable jazz pianists to emerge in Britain in recent years - a musician with fearless technique, unmistakable swagger and a melodic instinct shaped by his Welsh roots. His debut album, 'Hamstrings & Hurricanes', was shortlisted for the 2025 Mercury Prize, and he has performed with the Wynton Marsalis Quartet, toured with Jamie Cullum and appeared on Later… with Jools Holland, who calls him "the greatest new piano player in the world today". Signed to Edition Records, Joe draws on the virtuosity of stride and early jazz masters, filtered through a modern British sensibility.

Darlith Flynyddol Richard Burton 2026
Ymunwch â ni ar achlysur 101fed pen-blwydd geni Richard Burton.
Yn y ddarlith hon, bydd y pianydd a ganwyd yng Nghastell-nedd, Joe Webb, yn myfyrio ar y dylanwadau a lywiodd ei ddatblygiad yn bianydd jazz arobryn. Wrth iddo olrhain rhai o’r cerddorion a’i ysbrydolodd, bydd Joe yn archwilio datblygiad piano jazz o ddechrau’r ugeinfed ganrif i’r 1960au: o Scott Joplin i Bud Powell, Mary Lou Williams i Hazel Scott, a Jelly Roll Morton i Herbie Hancock. Ar hyd y ffordd, bydd yn arddangos arloesiadau arddulliadol allweddol ac yn perfformio darnau sydd wedi dod yn elfennau allweddol o’r canon jazz. Ar ôl iddo ymroi’n llawn i’w yrfa fel perfformiwr yn ystod y degawd diwethaf, mae Joe yn edrych ymlaen at rannu ei daith gerddorol mewn ffordd wahanol drwy’r cyfuniad unigryw hwn o berfformio a sgwrsio.
Mae Joe Webb yn un o'r pianyddion jazz mwyaf aruthrol i ddod i'r amlwg ym Mhrydain yn ystod y blynyddoedd diwethaf - cerddor â thechneg ddi-ofn, hyder diamheuol a greddf felodaidd wedi'i llunio gan ei wreiddiau Cymreig. Cyrhaeddodd ei albwm cyntaf, 'Hamstrings & Hurricanes', y rhestr fer ar gyfer Gwobr Mercury 2025, ac mae wedi perfformio gyda Phedwarawd Wynton Marsalis, teithio gyda Jamie Cullum ac ymddangos ar Later… with Jools Holland, sy'n ei ddisgrifio fel "y chwaraewr piano newydd gorau yn y byd heddiw". Wedi'i gontractio i Edition Records, mae Joe wedi’i ysbrydoli gan ragoriaeth meistri stride a jazz cynnar, wedi'i hidlo trwy synwyrusrwydd Prydeinig modern.
